Health
Kasei is home to St. Luke's Hospital, where people come from great distances to be treated with skill and integrity. They come because they know they will be treated with respect, that the staff genuinely care for their comfort and well-being, and that they will be charged an honest price for the service they receive. Dr. John Boateng, a BASIC board member, oversees operations and works as the head physician. Kari Bergstrom, a flight rescue nurse in Texas, has done extensive work at the St. Luke’s Hospital in the village. She trained the staff to work with the equipment and supplies that she brought in 2007. She delivered babies and worked with young mothers. Over her two visits, she has built strong relationships with the doctors, nurses, patients, and villagers. The children in the school and their parents have grown to trust her. Each visiting team has brought donated medical supplies and drugs to the St. Luke Hospital.
In the spring of 2009, Dr. Danylle Oldis spent over a month at the hospital, also working with the doctors and mid-wives to improve delivery and neonatal care.
